Microsoft MSFT|Decade-High Short Bet Meets 627B Backlog
The Decade-High Bearish Bet
Microsoft heads into Wednesday's earnings report facing its most bearish positioning in more than a decade. About 92 million shares are currently sold short, roughly 1.27% of the company's public float, the largest short interest since May 2015. Short sellers have barely covered their positions ahead of the print, a signal that the skepticism is not fading into earnings.
The stock has fallen from a record high of $556 to $390, dragging market capitalization from $3.89 trillion to $2.9 trillion. Shares are down more than 18% this year, underperforming the S&P 500 by nearly 25 percentage points. The immediate trigger came after Alphabet raised its own 2026 capital spending forecast and Alphabet stock slumped nearly 8% on the news, since investors read it as a preview of what Microsoft might announce next.
Analysts widely expect Microsoft to beat this quarter's numbers. Prediction markets assign a 91.5% probability to a beat. That expectation is not what is driving the short positioning. What worries the bears is forward guidance on capital spending for fiscal 2027, and whether that spending is starting to outrun the returns it produces.
The Case the Bears Are Missing
Microsoft's most recent quarter showed Intelligent Cloud revenue up 30% and Azure climbing 40%. CEO Satya Nadella pointed to an AI business running at a $37 billion annual rate, up 123% year over year. Commercial remaining performance obligations, the contracted revenue not yet recognized, stand at $627 billion.
Microsoft has guided to roughly $190 billion in capital expenditures for calendar 2026, including about $25 billion tied to higher component costs as memory and chip prices rise. Traders are split on whether Azure's constant-currency growth lands in the 40 to 42 percent range this quarter, putting only 53.5% odds on that outcome. That backlog of $627 billion is the bulls' strongest argument that the spending is not speculative capacity, but contracted demand already sold.
The bear case rests on a specific comparison: Alphabet beat its own numbers, then fell nearly 8% anyway once it raised capex guidance, because the market judged the spending was rising faster than the visible payoff. Microsoft's backlog and its 123% AI revenue growth are the counter-evidence, real, contracted monetization rather than a promise. The question earnings must answer is whether that revenue growth is accelerating fast enough to keep pace with a capex figure that could approach $230 billion next year.
What Wednesday Actually Decides
If Microsoft's forward capex number drifts toward $230 billion without a proportional acceleration in Azure growth, the stock faces renewed repricing risk on free cash flow. That is the specific, falsifiable condition the shorts are positioned around, not a generic worry about AI spending.
The selloff has already repriced the stock. Microsoft's forward price-to-earnings ratio has fallen to about 22.8, below the sector median near 24 and well under its own five-year average near 32. A decade-high short position sitting against a cheapened multiple and a $627 billion backlog is an unusual combination: heavy bearish conviction stacked on top of a stock that has already absorbed much of the fear it is being shorted against.
Options markets are pricing roughly an 8% move in either direction once results land. The stock has already priced in a beat and priced in real fear about capex. What has not been priced in is which of those two forces wins on Wednesday: contracted revenue that keeps compounding, or a spending number that finally outruns it. Holders and watchers alike get their answer within one earnings call, not a quarter of speculation.
